3 Reasons Why Tablets Can’t Replace Console Games

Share & Comment
Sensational industry analysts have over the years opined that console gaming is nearing the end of the road. The evolvement of the tablets have facilitated such wishful thinking but in reality and on paper, console gaming is miles ahead of the capacity of a tablet while the need for physical buttons places the tablet at a very disadvantageous state.
Despite the evolvement of motion technology in gaming, the need for physical buttons can’t be over-emphasized. Console game is indeed not dying anytime soon and it is equally well and alive. The buzz surrounding the release of the hotly anticipated Xbox One and PlayStation 4 gaming devices proves my claim beyond any reasonable doubt.
Now let us examine why tablets do not stand a chance in replacing traditional console gaming;
Tablets vs Console gaming

Power

In every gaming generation there is always an argument centered on the specs available to various gaming devices. It got to its peak with current generation of gaming where emphases was laid on the astounding power of the PS3 only made possible by the highly glorified “cell”. Obviously, no company wants to release a device that would later be labeled by the public and analysts as a down-market commodity. This places console gaming manufacturers at red alert who are required to stack in more power into their next console. Ultimately, this leads to evolvement and setting a new standards.
Gaming in the past was seen with great mediocrity and an embarrassing attempt to rival Holly Wood, the story is however different now, as highly rated games like Alan Wake and The Last of Us have put a lot of blockbuster Holly Wood movies to shame. The tablets lacks any form of power to output anything close to what console gaming has to offer. You have your doubt? Read on :)

Graphics and Performance

Gran Torismo 5 has a staggering 1,083 cars, damage control, weather effects, optional stereoscopic-3D, dynamic skid marks, dust and the ability for drivers to flash their headlights, yet GT5 used only 80% power of the PS3. The aforementioned stats should make anyone thinking that tablets has any chance of making console gaming go into oblivion think again.
I know they are great games like GTA 3 available on tablets but it is considerably downgraded to fit into the ridiculous performance of a tablet. Having any game in the scale of GTA 5 run on a tablet would be a case of placing a round peg in a square hole. The GPU of the best tablets out there can’t rival what’s available on the PS Vita needless to say it will have any effect on what next-gen brings to the table.

Buttons

The hype on motion controls failed and further explains why there isn’t any need to fix what’s not broken. The original idea of gaming with a controller was not a mistake over 25-years ago and it can’t automatically be a mistake now.
The controller places you right inside the game; it gives you the true feeling that you are actually controlling your character. I can’t even being to explain why physical buttons remains the only alternative for true gamers. Imagine playing Halo on a tablet, I can’t imagine how the “no-trigger” feelings would be. In essence, this is one major flaw of the tablets. The lack of physical buttons is a big letdown.

Conclusion

Tablets are great and equally has enormous reasons to have one. Every year there is an update on the processing power of what a tablet can do. But that’s not enough reason to believe tablets would replace console gaming. Mobile gaming is meant to pass time while you are on a bus or on an airplane. Even if that was to be the argument, hand-held gaming devices take care of that job on a much more epic scale.
Gaming has evolved and that evolvement was only made possible with the incredible power of console gaming devices. Gaming is a very serious business, conveying a message accompanied with emotions, Heavy Rain proves that we can indeed have emotion in gaming instead of the traditional “restart-button” whenever our character dies. Gaming is best on a large HD TV with optimum sound production. No doubt, you can connect a tablet to a TV, but then again you can’t get anything close to what console gaming devices produces.
